Malice Domestic: If Traditional Mysteries are Your Cup of Tea

Malice Domestic is a “fun fan” literary genre convention dedicated to the traditional mystery as exemplified by Agatha Christie. In fact, they award the prestigious Agatha Awards each year.

It’s also one of the few conventions that goes out of its way to get plenty of female author guests.

Malice Domestic is on my personal list of top 5 conventions I’d love to be able to go to some time. (oh Maryland, why must you be so far from California? I’ll triumph over you some day, geography. *shakes fist*)

A few of the 2011 panels that make me wish I could get there for this weekend’s event are: “The Poison Lady Presents Elemental Murder: Death by the Periodic Table” ; “Haunted Spots, Paranormal Plots: When Ghosts Settle in for the Long Haul” ; “Grannies with Guns and Trash-Talking Nuns: Characters Who Defy Stereotypes” ; and “Things We Wish We Hadn’t Written: Authors With Belated Second Thoughts“.

Malice Domestic 2011 has some really good guests lined up, too. Guest of Honor is Carole Nelson Douglas. Toastmaster is Donna Andrews, one of my favorite mystery writers. Fan Guest of Honor is Anne Murphy. With Sue Grafton as the Lifetime Achievement and Janet Rudolph as the Poirot Award honorees.

Malice, like many literary conventions, is a little on the expensive side. Onsite registration fee is $250, for instance. But well worth it for both mystery fans and writers.

Malice Domestic is the last weekend of April each year. For 2011 the convention will be April 29-May 1 in Bethesda, Maryland, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
