NYAF to Premiere Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below
Japanese animator and director Makoto Shinkai will be participating in the New York Anime Festival (NYAF) this October. Shinkai will be presenting the New York premier of his animated film Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below.
NYAF is part of the New York Comic Con (NYCC). It looks like you have to have a ticket to the Comic Con in order to get into the Anime Festival. The Festival was started by the NYCC organizers to spotlight anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture.
Makoto Shinkai, for those of you unfamiliar with the director/animator, entered the animation world in 2000 with She and Her Cat. He’s a production team of one, often single-handedly producing films that would typically require a full crew and pre-production team. Shinkai’s name is known to anime fans, critics, and cinemaphiles on both sides of the Pacific and he apparently gets compared to masters like Hayao Miyazaki and the late Satoshi Kon.
Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below is Makoto Shinkai’s latest work. It was released in Japan earlier this year in May and had it’s American premier at Otakon in July. Cruncyroll will be co-sponsoring Shinkai for the New York premier of his film.
So what’s Children who Chase Lost Voices from Deep Below about? Asuna, a young girl, meets a young man called Shun who comes from the faraway land of Agartha. The two quickly become friends, but just as quickly Shun disappears. Later Asuna hears the word “Agartha” in school as part of a fairytale. That’s when she knows adventure and mystery lie ahead.
After the premier, Makoto Shinkai will do a Q&A and autograph session.
New York Anime Convention occurs as part of the New York Comic Con. It is scheduled for October 13-16 of 2011 and will be held at the Javits Center in New York.
