Local Phoenix Band will play in the opening ceremonies for Phoenix Comicon.

April 14th 2010, Phoenix, AZ:

The Bad Cactus Brass Band will perform in the opening ceremonies for Phoenix Comicon, putting a new twist on sci-fi, anime, and video game themes with their brass band music and New Orleans flare.

“This is going to be really, really cool. It will be like partying in New Orleans and playing Halo at the same time,” said Convention Center Director Matt Solberg.

The Bad Cactus Brass Band is a New Orleans Second Line street jazz band based in Phoenix, Arizona. Founded by trombonist Benjie Messer in 2009, their members include many of the fieriest jazz musicians in the Phoenix area. Messer learned New Orleans music performing with the Hot Tamale Brass Band in Boston at Red Sox games, Mardi Gras parties, Phoenix Suns games, and many more.

Their repertoire includes funky dance music and street beats, traditional Dixieland and swing, and pop songs reinterpreted with a brass band sound.

“What a way to start the Phoenix Comicon!” said Joe Boudrie, Director of Programming for Phoenix Comicon.

Phoenix Comicon is the signature pop culture event of the southwest, presenting guests and programming for hobbyists and fans by attracting the top segments of the comics, anime, sci-fi, film, TV, and gaming industries.  Entering its ninth year, Phoenix Comicon is expected to draw over 10,000+ attendees to its May 27-30, 2010 convention held at the Phoenix Convention Center and Hyatt Regency located in downtown Phoenix.
