Cherie Priest & Gail Carriger Guests at World Steam Expo 2012

25 January 2012 by

The guest lineup for the 2012 World Steam Expo is looking pretty sweet. I just checked the Guest page and both Cherie Priest and Gail Carriger, both authors of note in the steampunk genre, are on the list.

When Gaslight Gathering was soliciting suggestions for Literary Guests of Honor for their 2012 event these two authors were at the top of the list I submitted. And here World Steam Expo has booked BOTH. So the jealous.

For those unfamiliar with these novelists, here’s a quickie intro:

Cherie Priest

Author of Boneshaker, which was nominated for both the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award, is a pulp steampunk adventure set in the North West of an alternate timeline where the Civil War was drawn out by English involvement. This is book one of her Clockwork Century series.

Boneshaker is also featured in our Top 10 Steampunk Holiday Gift Ideas from 2010. It’s one of those books that’s always on people’s top ten steampunk novels lists.

Cherie Priest is also an interesting speaker if her article “Pornography and War”, which appeared in in Locus Magazine’s steampunk issue, is anything to go by.

Gail Carriger

Author of the Parasol Protectorate series, which is set in an alternate history Victorian London where werewolves and vampires are an open part of Society. The main character is a woman who has no soul and is something of a blue stocking. Science and technology is nicely blended into the setting. It’s a different take on both steampunk and the supernatural and a damn fine read.

Gail Carriger is an entertaining and knowledgeable speaker. Mysterious Galaxy had a tea party author event for her to celebrate the release of the third book in the series, Heartless (if I recall correctly), and she was quite interesting.

In addition to Gail and Cherie, there are so far two other Guests scheduled; Jay Lake and G. D. Falksen.

The World Steam Expo is one of the biggest steampunk conventions out there right now. It’s scheduled for May 25-28 of 2012 and will be held at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn in Dearborn, Michigan. Registration is currently open.
